Delights!

I am so excited to share my latest project with you all! But let me start at the beginning.
(Warning: picture-mania to follow.)

One day, soon after we shared the news that we were expecting our first baby, I got an excited call from my mother. Not that an excited phone call from my mother is unusual- but she was especially excited and I could tell from her voice she was fairly bursting at the seams with glad tidings of great joy.

She had been to a local antique shop and had come across this LOVELY little gem...

But, apparently, mom wasn't the only lady with her eye on it and the shop owner had been offered quite a bit of money for it earlier that day.
Mom (never one to stop beating a dead horse) went ahead and made an offer (significantly lower than her predecessors) explaining to the shopkeeper that she couldn't offer more or even as much as the other lady had, but that her daughter (yours truly) was having her first child and it had always been her dream to have a bed like this for the little tot (...cue dewy mist in eyes...)
The shop owner said she had to confer with an associate and then came back and offered it to mom for even less than mom offered for it in the first place!
An aMaZing low price...
It was a steal!

When I lived at home with my parents I had an old wrought iron full size bed that my mother had salvaged from (I think) my dad's parents - Grammy and Grandpa Freeman. Long story short, I LOVED that old bed, and I have always wanted a wrought iron baby bed. They sell reproductions of them... but they can be quite pricey.  So for mom to find it, and for the shop owner to sell it to my mom for less than mom offered-
well, all I've got to say is:

Don't tell me GOD doesn't care about DELIGHTING us with the
desires of our hearts.

So after that introduction...
Let me share with you a little about the project that I have been working on.
A custom sized baby mattress.
Because the bed is very old and originally made in Germany, a standard sized mattress is too small for it.
I priced many online custom mattress makers however, they were incredibly expensive and I wasn't willing to go into debt for a piece of foam.
I was at a loss. What to do... oh what to do!
Then it hit me -   DIY - I can make my own!

Let me tell you, the hardest part of the whole project was getting the board from Lowe's into our smallish car and then home.
We tried every which way to get that board into our car. We probably looked like Laurel and Hardy . Finally we decided to try to get it in the trunk. We folded down the backseats which gives access to the trunk, in an attempt to slide it into the backseat, but the board was too wide to slide through the opening, so as Mr. M. drove home, I was in the floorboard of the backseat holding onto the board and the trunk lid for dear life!
Poor baby cakes was privy to more than one exclamation from mommy dearest as we traveled the pothole infested roads of Cincy!

But enough about that- let's get to it!

"Toupgrade"
What... you've never heard of that word before?

Many thanks to Mom and Dad for finding and buying this treasure.
ALSO...
The bed is undergoing a smidgen of a makeover right now. It is being stripped of all old paint and then it will be repainted- a lot of work that Mr. M. and Sherilyn (Mother M...?) are undertaking. THANK YOU TOO!

We have one just like it, it was Brian's when he was a baby and all of my kids used it when they were babies. Now we have it in our guest bedroom. Glad you got your wish, I am so excited for you guys!!! Congrats on the new little one to soon grace your family!!!

Hi, Andrew's mom. Thanks for visiting. I was wondering, did you have any problems with the babies getting "stuck" between the rails? I am a little worried about that. i plan to have a bumper- but even those can be dangerous. What was your experience?
